So every really good TV show develops backstories for the characters we love. Well, here’s the brief backstory of my life. So many people ask me about living in Alaska and what’s it like here. I’ll have to tell more backstory as I go along.
Let me tell you: I’ve been there and done that. I used to weigh over 300 lbs.
Yah! That’s right… 300 pounds.
I’ve been married three times. I have five children and four grand-babies.
I had a tech career for 10 years. I was a systems, network and video conferencing engineer and a Microsoft Certified Technical trainer. I worked in corporate human resources. I was in sales. I worked in health care.
I retired from all that to become a licensed orthopedic manual therapist (think massage therapist that bills health insurance) and I own Wholistic Massage and Wellness, in Anchorage, Alaska.
I co-founded and own, with my husband, Bill, the Alaska Gun School. I lead the Alaska Chapter of A Girl and a Gun. I’m an NRA Certified Instructor, Range Safety Officer, and a shooting sports competitor participating in Steel Challenge, USPSA and 3 Gun!
I come from a big family (I have five siblings) and my father passed when I was in my early 30s.
I have lived all over America and I have traveled to many countries. In 1996, I moved to Alaska, and I’ve been here for almost 20 years now!
For 10 years, I lived OFF the road system (in the Alaska Bush). I had to take a plane, boat, snow-go, or dogsled to get to civilization. (Yep, like on the Discovery Channel.)
When we lived in Dillingham, Alaska (at the headwaters of Bristol Bay – where the Deadliest Catch guys fish), we had a farm where we raised ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys. We also had a market garden, baked bread for sale from our kitchen and sold eggs. Bill and I worked full-time at the hospital, as well.
Most days, I’d wake up and wonder why I hurt everywhere: my knees, my hands, my neck, my feet, my back. I’d to say to myself, “I’m smart. Look at what I’ve gone through and accomplished. I’m okay. BUT why can’t I figure this out? Why do I hurt? Why do I feel like crap?”
My marriage to Bill was good, but we were out of sync with each other. I’d get so angry at him sometimes. I’d yell crazy hurtful sh** at him and at the same time, in the midst of the tirade, somewhere in my head, I thought, “What in the hell are you doing? You love him. You can’t do this to him. Why am I doing this?”
It was like watching a car wreck in slow motion and I could.not.stop the words from coming out of my mouth. I was frustrated, angry and I didn’t know why.
I wondered if I had failed my kids. I felt guilty for not being a great mom when I wasn’t at my finest. You know what I mean?
Let me get back to my story: Then, a really great thing happened.

[container]Late in the winter of 2012, I fell on the ice. I spent 6 weeks partly paralyzed and in excruciating pain. The fall caused all sorts of damage to my body, but the worst of it was two herniated disks in my lower back. For treatment, I had to fly into Anchorage and my orthopedic doctor suggested surgery to fix my back. I did not want surgery.
“Hmm, okay,” he said. “Make some ‘lifestyle’ changes and lose some weight. But when you can’t stand the pain any longer, come back to me and I’ll do the surgery.”[/container]
Okay: No to surgery. Yes to losing weight.
[custom_headline type=”left, center, right” level=”h2″ looks_like=”h3″ accent=”true”] So What Changed? [/custom_headline]
[container]I finally had a “WHY” big enough for me to start examining my life. I had a direction I wanted to go in, and in the process of learning, researching and studying, I figured some things out.[/container]
[blockquote type=”center”]I discovered the Secret to the Universe. I found the Golden Ticket.
But most importantly, I began – for the first time – owning my life.
1. My thoughts determine how I feel.
2. How I feel determines the results I experience in my life.
That’s it – That’s all you need to change your life into what you’ve always wanted.
Except for the most important step:
[container] [blockquote type=”center”]3. I got coaching. I practiced and applied what I learned.[/blockquote] [/container]
It’s one thing to intellectually understand these three steps. It’s a completely different reality to apply these concepts in your life.
Before I learned the Three Steps to managing my mind above, I very nearly divorced Bill. Now we’ve been married almost 20 years and we’ve never been better, happier and more in love than we are each new morning. He is the love of my life and the most incredible, amazing man I know.
And I love my grand-babies more than life itself! My relationships with my children are full of love and respect for them, their decisions, and how they live their lives.
After gaining and losing more than 300+ pounds in my adult life, I quit the diet yo-yo rollercoaster and I’ve lost 135 lbs. For good. It’s never coming back. AND I just don’t talk the talk – I walk the walk!
I am not finished with my weight loss adventure. I still have 50ish pounds to go and I do my thought work and I use the tools I teach everyday! I’m right here with you.
The great news is: One of my Super Powers is the ability to genuinely and authentically connect with women and teach them the tools I’ve learned so they can create the life they want. – with the added BONUS of a healthier, smaller body they love.
I can help you learn to watch your thoughts so you can consciously choose the life you want and how you want to show up in it.
I’ve had a pretty crazy, fabulous life and it certainly is an adventure. I can’t wait to see what happens.
I’ve done this. I lost the weight. You can too!
